Snorkel or Dive with Massive Manta Rays off Nusa Lembongan near Bali

Jump now, Jump now the captain says as you pull up to Manta bay. Confused and bewildered you plunge in the ocean.  As you hit the water you look about 30 feet down into the crystal clear water and see 3 larger than life manta rays gliding effortlessly.  On one occasion, a manta ray glided about 15 feet from us. The biggest manta ray we saw had around a 10-foot wing span. As we were about to leave the bay a huge manta ray breached the water as if it were flying from one wave to the next. What a majestic creature.  After we had enough of the rocky waters of manta bay we hopped back in the boat to head to Crystal bay and Mangrove point. Both were in calm waters with a beautiful array of coral and underwater life.

Location

Manta Ray Snorkel Tours, Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia (off the coast of Bali)

Cost

$15 USD pp ($200k rupiah)

What to Expect

There are many tours offered around both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Cennigan.  There are also many dive shops that offer diving with Manta Rays if you are a diver.  We suggest you book your trip a couple days in advance.  For snorkeling, our guide Diasa, in the link above owns and operates the tour we did and is wonderful.

The tour provides:

  • Half day, usually starts in the morning around 8/8:30 am
  • Finns, mask, and snorkel
  • Water
  • Since it is a half day tour it does not include lunch
  • Groups are around 8 to 10 people on the boat
  • ~45 minutes of snorkeling at each location

Other things to note:

  • Manta bay may be very choppy depending on the day
  • Crystal bay and Mangrove point have very calm waters
  • Crystal bay is a bit cooler water than the other two locations

What to Bring

  • On a choppy day, we suggest taking some non-drowsy motion sickness pills or wear one of the motion sickness bracelets if you get sea sick
  • Long sleeved quick dry shirt to keep you warm in Crystal bay if you get cold easily
  • Bring your go pro and or camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Towel
