Local Transportation:

Once you arrive at the Belize City airport you will have two options to get out to the Ambergris Caye area. Hop on a small plane for ~$200 USD/person round trip. Or head into Belize City ports and hop on the San Pedro Express water taxi for $35 USD/person round trip.

Once you get to your island getaway you will have a few options for transportation:

  • . Water taxi from one part of the island to the next for $5 USD/person
  • Van taxi $5 to 10 USD
  • Bike rental $7/day per bike.
  • Golf Cart rental ~$60/day (flexible pricing depending on the season)

The most used option on the island will be the golf cart. There are golf cart companies everywhere trying to get your business for a golf cart rental. Do not pay more than $60/day for a golf cart rental, and make sure when booking all fees are included in the price. Your golf cart will fit 4 people comfortably or in true Belizean fashion you can put 5 adults and 3 children on the cart.

On the mainland you will have many options to get around. The local bus is the cheapest mode of transportation Belize. For example, a bus ride from Belize City to San Ignacio (2.5 hours) will cost you around $10-20 USD/round trip per person. It is important to note that typically these are school type buses with the windows open and no air conditioning.

The car rental will give you the most flexibility and cost about $150 USD for 2 days for the car and full insurance. Make sure when driving on the highways to look out for the large unmarked speed bumps and cross walks all over the country. I would not recommend driving at night in Belize since their highways are all two lanes and portions of the roads are not paved.
